AVF Brings .NET Capabilities In-House
Navision clients can now get custom web, PDA and desktop applications

Microsoft Navision is a flexible and customizable software tool, but it cannot solve every issue of an organization.  To help provide our clients with customized solutions that connect with Navision, but are outside of its native functionality, AVF has invested in developing custom applications utilizing .NET technology.  AVF recently hired Jon Cooper, a systems architect experienced in .NET technology and web-based applications, to develop solutions that will help solve our clients’ business pains at a reasonable cost.

A few solutions that AVF is currently proposing for clients include:

  • A web-based PDA application for Field Service Management to streamline inventory management, track deliveries in real-time and help reduce paperwork.

  • A web-based P.O. and requisition system that allows remote sites (not connected to Navision) to process requisitions simply and quickly.

  • An application that dynamically creates PDFs from items that are stored in Navision.  The user can then utilize the PDFs on the web or for email distribution.

Using XML technology, we can fully access the business logic within Navision from our .NET solutions, thereby greatly reducing the amount of code needed in the application.  This means that we can deliver our .NET solutions quickly and affordably, without any duplication of effort.

The solutions that AVF can now create are seemingly endless and are often much less expensive than purchasing additional off-the-shelf software.  We don’t expect you to identify the exact solutions you need.  Our goal is to understand where there are disruptions, inefficiencies or just plain problems in your business flows.  Once we have a clear idea of where your pains are, we can propose solutions that can streamline processes and allow Navision to work even better for you.

If you are interested in exploring how .NET technology may be able to help you, speak with your AVF consultant or contact Andrew Fass at 410-296-5100.

Tips & Tricks

1099 and W-2 Tip

Run your 1099s and W-2s mid year.  This will allow you to review the totals for accuracy, as well as ensure easy processing at year end.  This exercise is especially important for any company that pays out bonuses or has multi-state splits.

Expert Advice

Security Management

The recently released Security Management granule is gaining acceptance within the Navision user community. This granule enables the Navision system manager to hide fields or make them visible but not editable for a user or group of users. In addition to field level security, the Security Manager can also impose filters on tables to control the data that a user has access to. For example, it is very easy to set a filter for a group of users that will only show a particular range of G/L accounts. Security Management works even in highly modified databases, on your custom tables, and does not require additional programming to implement.

The Customer Card shows all fields on a standard customer card.

This Security Setup hides the Balance field and sets the Credit Limit field to be non-editable for USER1.

When logging on as USER1 the Balance field does not show and the Credit Limit field is viewable but cannot be edited.

Setting Table Filters
Below is the setting of table filters based on a user or user group.

The G/L Account list without a security level filter.

Security setup of table filters based on a user or user group.  Up to three fields can be included in the filter.

When logging on as USER1 the G/L Account List only shows G/L Account between 65600 and 65800.
