From the President-- Andrew Fass

20% Growth in 2002 sets AVF’s pace for the New Year

Even though the 2002 economy was rockier than years past, AVF managed to increase revenues by 20%.  Not only did this growth earn us ranking as a Technology Pacesetter by Accounting Today magazine for the second year in a row (see details in AVF News below), but it demonstrated our commitment to delivering innovative technology solutions to our clients.

When I started AVF Consulting 17 years ago, our philosophy was to find long term solutions for our clients that would contribute to their growth and help them save money.  Our system for success consists of staying on the forefront of top technology and developing expertise in specific areas.  In the past two years, we’ve added experienced professionals to our team including an IT practice to provide the most comprehensive service to our clients.

We have also developed strategic relationships with Navision partners such as InfoStore, Serenic, and Targit in order to offer point-of-service software, fund accounting, and analysis capabilities. We choose the products that we offer carefully, but we are not afraid of new technology.  Because AVF often brings these solutions to the market early, we uphold our reputation as a reliable and knowledgeable partner.

Our plans for steady continued growth in 2003 include offering Microsoft’s CRM product, which we expect to be released by mid-year.  This will give clients a choice between Navision’s robust CRM tool and Microsoft’s .NET based product.  Microsoft Navision 3.60 is also a premier addition to the market that fills a need for an advanced accounting system and makes competing products pale in comparison.

The largest factor that supports AVF’s success is our clients, who fuel our problem-solving skills and make our days exciting.  As your businesses grow and your needs change, you give us an inside look at how market trends affect the intimate details of your industries.  We look to 2003 to solidify our commitment to our clients as we grow into the New Year.

Navision 3.60 Features Deposit Slips

A new feature in Microsoft Navision 3.60 is Deposit Slips.  Part of Bank Management, Deposit Slips are a new way to enter Cash Receipts.  In Navision, you’re now able to mirror the actual bank deposit slip you prepared.

Like other documents in Microsoft Navision, a Deposit consists of a Header table and a Line table.

The Deposit Header contains all the relevant information about the deposit as a whole - the bank account, the posting date, and the total deposit amount.

Deposit detail lines contain information about the individual deposited items (usually checks from Customers), such as document date and number, account type and number, and amount. As you enter detail lines, the program tracks the count of deposit entries and the total of detail line amounts.  The total of the amounts on the lines must add up to the total amount of deposit entered in the Header.

For each detail line, you can select the Apply Entry function to apply the full amount or a partial amount to an open ledger entry, Customer Ledger, for example.

To create a new deposit, go to the General Ledger menu, select Deposits.  Fill in the Header, and then enter the individual lines. The program will automatically copy any relevant information from the header to the lines.

After you have filled in the Header and associated Lines, you must post it in order to update the bank ledger, general ledger, customer ledger and any other relevant ledger. Prior to posting, you can print a test report which shows the relevant deposit header and line information, along with application entries.

The program also stores the posted Deposit permanently for future reference. From the Main Menu, you can click General Ledger, and then click Posted Deposits to see the results.

Don’t forget to clear your filters!

Have you ever found yourself conducting a query in Navision, only to find that you can’t seem to access a comprehensive list of the data?  If you have set any filters since opening Navision, they will affect all queries until they are removed.  Check to see if “Filter” appears in the bottom menu bar of Navision.   To clear a filter, click the “Show All” button in the top menu bar.

SPAM:  Stop the Invasion!

We’ve all been victims of it.  Whether it’s advertisements for mortgages, credit cards or any unsolicited offer, spam can clog up email as well as offend, annoy and distract.  Once a marketer has your email address, you fall victim to their onslaught of tacky sales tactics.

The best method for combating spam is to use software that fits your needs, which creates another problem:  Which software should you use and how much should you spend?  There are spam fighting products that begin at $19.99 and go up to hundreds of dollars.

“A key difference in spam software is desktop vs. server level protection,” commented John White, IT Consultant, AVF Consulting. “Businesses want to purchase software that protects at the server level in order to fully and easily shield users and manage messages.  Server level protection eliminates the need to upgrade each individual workstation and typically functions at a higher level.”

It is also important to have a system for reviewing blocked emails, in case a legitimate message is mistakenly blocked.  Does your software allow you to access blocked messages and discriminately retrieve them?

After evaluating countless products, AVF chose GFI Mail Security (www.gfi.com) to manage its operations.  However, there are plenty of products on the market to choose from.  If would like more information on spam-blocking software, or if you would like AVF’s IT team to install and configure the software on your server, contact John White (jwhite@avfconsulting.com) or Rob Waples (rwaples@avfconsulting.com) at 410-889-3400.
