Not Upgrading Costs One Company Time, Money and Potential Business --
Key Reasons to Upgrade Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Have you been diligent about making sure your Microsoft Dynamics NAV system has been updated to the newest release of your version?  Is your organization considering upgrading to Microsoft Vista?  Are you on a version of NAV lower than 4.0 SP3?

While AVF Consulting supports all versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Serenic Navigator and LS Retail our clients currently use, Microsoft has phased out support of versions older than 4.0 SP3. Recently, a long time AVF client on a dated version of Microsoft Dynamics NAV experienced some major issues with their system that could have been avoided if they had been proactive about upgrades.

The specialty distributor encountered data corruption issues in their database. Unfortunately for the client, their version of Microsoft Dynamics NAV did not allow data backups.  This issue occurred at the height of their sales season when they needed their systems to run flawlessly.  The extent of data corruption made it necessary for the team at AVF to seek a solution with Microsoft.  As Microsoft no longer supports their 2.X version, the client was left with some tough and costly decisions.

While the situation discussed above is a "worst case" scenario, it brings to light the depth of the problem of an out-of-date system. Upgrading very old and outdated solutions is exponentially more expensive than the cost of remaining current with upgrades and patches.

Key Reasons to Upgrade NAV

  • To ensure you have access to support.  Microsoft only provides support for the more recent versions of NAV.  If your old version has problems beyond what AVF can repair, then you can find yourself in a dire and expensive situation—often at the most inconvenient time.
  • To keep your business running efficiently and effectively.  Microsoft puts millions of dollars each year behind its development to make sure it is providing the best that technology can offer.  Better integration, improved focus on users, and stronger tracking and analysis can save your organization time and money.
  • To ensure that NAV can work with the newest Microsoft operating systems.  Microsoft Vista is only compatible with NAV versions 4.0 SP3 and up, so if you are using an old version of NAV, you've limited other software and technology choices.
  • Budget.  It is typically much easier and cheaper to budget for smaller upgrades than it is to upgrade across multiple versions.  Also, smaller upgrades are often less time consuming and easier for users to adapt to.

It is our goal at AVF to provide our clients with the best possible software to run their businesses. We regularly communicate features and benefits of the newest versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Serenic Navigator and LS Retail to give our clients the opportunity to maximize their operations.  Beyond additional functionality in upgrades, you are getting the most up-to-date technology and support.  That provides you and us with peace of mind, knowing that your systems will be reliable when you need them the most.

If your organization is currently on a version of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Serenic Navigator, or LS Retail that predates 4.0 SP3, we strongly recommend you consider an upgrade. In some cases, the cost can seem larger than your organization wants to spend, but the cost of lost data, lost business, and lost customers will be much greater if you have to spend days or weeks fixing an outdated system.  Contact Steve Schmidt at 443-279-1034 or sschmidt@avfconsulting.com to discuss your current system and to get an estimate for upgrading NAV.

Post & Print function from Journal Post (General, Cash Receipt, Payment, etc.) does not
produce Journal Register report.

Have you ever chosen the Post & Print option from a Journal in Dynamics NAV and received no Journal Register report after the process has been completed?

This is a fairly common issue in Navision. The cause is due to the fact that the Journal Register report printed from the posting of a Journal is the same report that is run from the Financial Management->General Ledger->Reports->Entries->G/L Register menu selection. When the report is run from the menu selection and filter criteria are applied (e.g. a Register No.), that filter criteria is saved for that report. This saved filter criteria interferes with the printing of the report when run from the Journal Post & Print option.

The simple solution to this problem is to run the G/L Register report from the menu selection, clear any and all filter criteria in all tabs on the report options window, then click Preview button. This will begin processing the report for all Registers, but you can simply press the ESC key to interrupt the processing. This should allow the report to print the next time the Post & Print function is performed.
